Note: This must be done while receiving an active transmission from the station whose CTCSS code is to be determined. This can be done in either Frequency Mode (VFO) or Channel Mode (MR).
[MENU] [1] [1] (selects menu 11 - R-CTCS)
[MENU] (activates R-CTCSS entry mode)
[ * SCAN ] (press and hold until scanning of CTCSS tones begins)
The UV-5R will scan through the available CTCSS tones until the correct tone is detected.
[MENU] (to save the scanned tone into the menu 11 register)
Use the detected tone to program your T-CTCSS tone.
Don't forget to set Menu 11 back to OFF.

Trouble scanning for CTCS

I can't get my UV-5R Baofeng radio to scan for CTCS or DCS. The steps should be: Tune to channel of interest, menu, 11, menu again to enter, press * scan button and CTCS should light up on left side of display as the radio scans through the available options. My radio just beeps at the press of the * scan button, but does nothing else - hold it down, tap it once, nothing makes any difference. It also won't hold a CTCS code. Program one in, hit menu and hear the 'Confirmed' response, but then when you check back the CTCS is set to "OFF". It resets itself after each attempt and I don't know why.
I've been able to program channels without any problem, but I can't use the radio with any others on this system if I can't figure out which CTCS or DCS to use and make it stick. Can you please help?
